Kyiv: Identity and Conflict in the Post-Soviet Space

Study Abroad

As the Soviet Union crumbled, it left behind ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse successor states. As these states tried to form domestic policies and governing institutions, the interests of their various populations were (and still are) often in conflict. Civil war erupted in Tajikistan and Georgia. Riots swept Kyrgyzstan. Armed conflicts broke out in Moldova and Russia.

While based in Kyiv, Ukraine, you will travel to Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia to discuss the conflicts in all these states, both past and present, with local experts. Learning of the historical background and the interests of groups involved, including foreign interests, you will critically consider the governance problems that face modern multiethnic states. You will search for pragmatic solutions using the experience you gain on the ground. This program provides invaluable experience for anyone interested in diplomacy or policy making.

Spring 2021/Covid-19 Update: to allow for maximum flexibility, deadlines have been moved to November 1 and deposits will be fully refundable up until it is necessary to process visas – approximately 3-4 weeks prior to arrival. We do encourage applying before the November 1 deadline so that you receive our updates. Those looking to hit the ground running will want to look at our online courses, which will also earn you SRAS Learning Credit for your future study abroad experiece.
