Bishkek: Central Asian Studies

Study Abroad

Central Asian Studies provides an intensive study of the fascinating region of Central Asia, combining our intensive Russian as a Second Language course with a range of language, linguistics, and regional studies courses.

The semester program addresses geopolitics, history, and culture and takes you to Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The summer program looks at the region through the lens of cultural and linguistic anthropology and includes travel to Uzbekistan and a week-long trek by horseback in the Kyrgyz mountains.

Summer 2021/Covid-19 Update: to allow for maximum flexibility, deadlines have been moved to March 15 and deposits will be fully refundable up until it is necessary to process visas – approximately 3-4 weeks prior to arrival. We do encourage applying before the deadline so that you receive our updates. Those looking to hit the ground running will want to look at our online courses, which will also earn you SRAS Learning Credit for your future study abroad experiece.

"I just got a Masters in Public Administration focusing on international arts nonprofits, but along the way got a job at the Middle East Studies Center at Portland State University, where I'm coordinating public programs on all things Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. I actually got hired on for this position because of my unique background in Central Asian studies and all the research I did abroad with SRAS." - Corinne Hughes/SRAS Central Asian Studies Program Alumna
