Russia Online: Glimpses into Russian Art History

Short Course

In four chronologically arranged sessions we will explore distinctive facets of Russian visual art. Our topics will embrace (1) the golden artifacts of Scythians, the nomads that roamed the steppes of would-be-Russia; (2) Russia’s adoption of Christianity and architecture of Kyiv, Novgorod, Suzdal, Vladimir and Moscow; (3) European styles on Russian soil – Neo-Classicism, Romanticism and Realism in Russian painting of the 18th – 19th cc., and (4) Russian Modernism and the Avant-garde in the art of late 19th – early 20th cc.

By looking closely at the selected masterpieces, we will seek a better understanding of their peculiar artistic features and of their overall cultural significance.

This course is open to anybody with an interest in art history.
