Professional Training: Legal and Court Interpreter

Short Course

The course introduces participants to legal and court interpreter roles and skills, interpreter ethics, and legal and court terminology in both English and the target language. Students will gain an understanding of the US legal system and take a close look at the Standards and Procedures for Court Interpreters, the document which regulates professional court interpreting.

This course is administered by Language Connections in Boston, MA. To join an upcoming course, contact us to have a preliminary discussion about your current language level. The requirements for a legal interpreter are somewhat higher than those for a medical interpreter because the terminology is more complex and less familiar to most - and perhaps more importantly, legal intpreting is simultaneous, whereas medical tends to be consecutive. As a general guideline, your Russian language level should be minimally C1 per the Common European Framework of Language Proficiency. This implies formal study of at least 3-4 years (or the equivalent, such as time abroad) or a heritage speaker. The next step is then our very short application, at which point you will be directed to our colleagues at Language Connections for a more formal language assessment.

Total course cost is $750 ($50 of this is a non-refundable application fee).
