Kyiv: The Geopolitics of Ukraine

Study Abroad

Ukraine is a vast and beautiful land, blessed with resources and expanses of rich, fertile soil. Ukraine is also a land, however, long been riven by corruption, poor governance, and political divisions. Thus, despite its bounty, it remains one of Europe's poorest countries. These divisions and riches - along with geographic position - also make it a target for competing foreign interests.

Ukraine makes a fascinating case study for geopolitics. We will explore what divides and unites Ukraine, its challenges and its potential. We will travel extensively throughout Ukraine, meet with locals, and come to understand the regional (including borderland) identities. The Soviet identity, the formation of the Ukrainian (post-Soviet) identity, the rise of civil society, youth movements and more in the context of Ukraine's domestic interests and those of foreign powers, near and far.

We will be based in Kyiv, and travel to Lviv, Odessa, and Kharkiv - and many other places in between. Join this four-week exploration of Ukraine or make it six weeks by including the Language Intensive
